Right. Positive first, Ellie, positive first....

I am drawing! I have got the drawing gene back, somehow. I'm working on a picture to help me learn Kanji, by composing a picture entirely of kanji drawn over and over each other. Just like Takeshi Beat does in Hanabi, if anyone has watched that, with the blood in the snow.

Thanks to :iconn-one: and :iconyonarai: for their kind words about my pictures over the last week.

Oh, and I think I just joined :iconbleach-fanatics09:. *shrugs*


WILD CONFUSION:

I feel so fucking caged in this house. The stress levels are ridiculous. Srsly.

And my mum is the worst.


Any she just keeps mistaking all my male characters for girls. "His arms are too thin." "His face is too chiseled". "His nose is very small." "Aren't those breasts?"

WHAT. JUST WHAT. I was drawing Keru too! Not one of my seriously girly guys. He had arm muscles!!!

Please, people, are my guys really THAT bad? I know I can draw guys that look like manga heroes, but that's not exactly what I want to draw and I'm fed up of having to prove myself. Have I got the stylisation that wrong?

I don't want to pest everyone with a poll, but I do want some help here, and some answers.

Well, (in response to your post about male characters) I've had a bimble through your gallery and I can tell who are men! BUT we see what we are programmed to see / expect by society and there is also an expectation that we'll see hyper-reality (even if unconsiously). For example, women are hairy and men are hairier... so somewhere along the lines it has become a social expectation that women who are "proper" women are even less hairy... and so we remove all our body hair. And so we look at a woman with hairy legs and go "whoaa that ain't right" and we look at a skinny bloke with thin(ner) arms and go "whoa is he a lady or what"...

You could play around with androgyny and poses and stuff. A woman can dress as a man and still seem a "woman" by how she stands, and vice versa. You could try studying people and how they stand and set yourself some challenges of depicting "maleness" just from a stance.. LOL I am getting all art-teacher on your ass, sorry! It has got me thinking, that's all, I feel some art coming on now... :-)

Bimble. Wow what a wonderful word.

I do get annoyed by these societal stereotypes. I am fully aware of the difference between western styles of art and Asian styles, but my mum IS used to me drawing manga, and therefore should be aware of the differences. In today's society, even in western culture, male body hair is becoming less attractive.

That's a good idea, actually! Thank you! Don't worry about getting all art-teachery, it's nice to have someone offer suggestions and support rather than just "lol no way haha. Ur guys are hawt".
